My boss Azhar left the research group in Basel and got a professorship at NYU. Everyone at work agreed that the former head of Biomedical Lasers and Optics Group (BLOG) deserves a gift made by laser.

There is a Swiss company which can do 3D engraving into a glass. After careful examination, the BLOG team agreed that 3D portraits in glass look like ghosts. Great gift for a funeral. For the first time I could also imagine how a ghost screw driver would look like! We reduced the dimension and I volunteered to design the gift.

The BLOG team gave me the following task – the gift needs something to remind him of Switzerland, the project he worked on, his name and some kind words. And what is more Swiss than the grandious Toblerone mountain? I found a cool image on Clipartmag and vectorized it. I included the logos of the project and a thank you note. We picked a piece of glass with the fanciest shape and a high-power LED (a proper illumination source for a researcher who’s cutting bones with lasers).

There is a slight 3D effect as all 4 design pieces are in different depths of the glass. It was a great suggestion from the manufacturer.

Sketch that I got from the manufacturer.
Happy owner, already thinking hard how to fit this in his hand luggage. Photo by T. Schürch.
