Have you ever heard of the Burning man festival? There is a place in the middle of a desert in Nevada, USA, far away from any civilization. Once the time arrives, the community of creative people builds a temporary city on a dry lake bed called playa. The city lays the foundation for the magic of connection and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Burning man is a place and time when people can express themselves, free from the usual judgment. An essential part of the festival is art – anything from self-designed clothes, art cars to huge interactive art pieces.

Burning man inspired festivals happen all over the world. The work I’m presenting below is a part of collaborative art project for Afrika Burn, taking place in April 2022 in a desert in South Africa. The project currently involves around 50 volunteers. The idea is to create a 10-m tall sculpture named Tree of Temples. The sculpture resembles a tree trunk which is dotted with small illustrations. Light inside of the tree transforms the trunk into a huge lamp shade.

The model

Each illustration is designed based on photos from the past years of Afrika Burn. The challenge is to create designs suitable to be laser-cut into plywood. What a coincidence that I own a laser cutter, right? I don’t think I can see my creations on the tree in 2022. Luckily, they will not burn it this time… 🙂

Enjoy the glimpse into weirdness and my joy of using a graphical tablet!
