One of the perks of unemployment is seemingly infinite amount of time. That’s how it felt for me during the first week, then again, I switched to my classic “I wish I had more time to learn this…”. Apart from not having time to get bored, my unemployed time budget was well spent hanging out with friends and family. The word about my availability has reached my friends all over Europe and I got to welcome plenty of amazing people in Switzerland.
If you are visiting Switzerland from pretty much anywhere in the world, you will find it very expensive. Taking a train to a nearby town will cost you as much as a hotel night in the nearby countries, and if you combine it with a cable car you can easily pay as much as your European flight to Switzerland. This is why we never take Swiss trains with my visitors, unless I’m lucky and I manage to get us cheap day tickets. Even with those, it’s still cheaper to share a car.
One day, somewhere on the way to Liechtenstein,
I invented a new car game. Let me present you… The basic version of my Canton bingo!

Rules:
- The goal is to spot car license plates from all 26 Swiss cantons while driving somewhere (in Switzerland, it’s less fun to do it abroad).
- You can circle/cross/color the cantons on the map.
- The primary player must be one of the passengers. The driver can play if it’s not too distracting.
- Don’t know what AR license plate means? Feel free to look it up and learn something about the canton.
- Don’t look at license plates on a touristic parking lot.
- One bingo sheet per day. You can finish it on the way home!
- What’s the bingo prize? Completely up to you. How about sharing a Swiss chocolate?
I attached a pdf version that you can print at home. It’s based on a free map downloaded from here. Please let me know how you like the game and your suggestions will be implemented in the Canton Bingo 2.0.
Enjoy and please spread the word!
